This is a memoir of an missionary kid growing up in the Philippines in the 1930s. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese invaded the island where Jean's family lived and where her father, Dr. McAnlis, practiced medicine. The children were sent to hide in the hills with 'Aunt Olive' while the parents remained to attend to the patients in the hospital. Move with her from Santo Tomas to eventual freedom.
